Mongolia Horse Riding Experiences

Firsthand Learning about Nature and Culture

Mongolia horse riding experiences are a multi-facetted adventure. They offer truly experiential travel – for guests to connect to nature and culture, to make it their own personal story and leave with unforgettable memories.
Horseback travel is simply the best way to get into the back country and to move across the scenic landscapes of the “Land of the Blue Sky”. It’s the best way to tune into a culture borne from the earliest human-horse interaction. It’s a way of life in a country that holds the cradle of nomadic civilization – a country that has branded itself as “nomadic by nature” to welcome visitors to share its unique traditions and natural wonders.

Mongolia Horse Riding Experiences – Enjoy Parks and Wilderness Areas

Mongolia horse riding experiences with Stone Horse Expeditions are in the Khentii Mountains and Gorkhi Terelj National Park in Mongolia. They offer a wealth of human and natural history for the horseback traveler to explore.

The Sacred Khentii Mountains – Ride Ancient Horse Trails in Mongolia

The Khentii Mountains are in Mongolia’s mountain and taiga forest zone. This remote wilderness is habitat to moose, bear, wolf, wolverine, elk and roe deer to name a few wildlife species. Deep in the Khentii mountains, sheer cliffs and barren mountain tops are awe inspiring sights. The mountain slopes are forest clad, with larch and pine dominating, and spruce occurring. Narrow horse trails, carved over centuries of horseback travel into the landscape lead riders to follow ancient routes – through forest, brush and grasslands.
Moving through these wild forests speaks to your senses – the smell of the forest floor, the sound of the wind in the tree tops, and the call of a raven high above. In the mornings, mist may soften the scenery until the fog lifts and gives way to great views of the expedition camp in a mountain meadow, the horses grazing and the blue sky breaking through to make for a great day of riding.

the rolling grasslands, where towering rock formations dwarf a passing horse pack expedition, is an exhilarating experience. Stone Horse Expeditions in this park often make their way up to a high point for a well- deserved break for horses and riders, and for great views. From there, one can look back onto undulating meadow lands, brimming with wildflowers or glowing in autumn colors. To the north, the sight may be open onto the distant high mountains, and to a glimpse of the pass that expeditions navigate to reach the remote back country of the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area.

Life Changing Experiences – Connect with Wilderness, Yourself and with Horses

Like any travel in unfamiliar surroundings and exploration of wilderness, Mongolia horse riding experiences are a great way to connect with nature, with yourself – and with horses. Whether you are a novice or familiar with our equine friends, Mongolian horses are of amazing character, easygoing due to their natural upbringing and life in the grasslands, yet tough and of extraordinary endurance due to their half wild lifestyle and great genetic make-up.

Horse Riding Experiences in Autumn

While the summer is great with wildflowers and warmer temperatures, fall is a great season as well for horseback travel. Most days are warmed by the autumn sun, the air is crisp and night temperatures drop. A good time to enjoy the wood stove heated outfitter’s tent carried by Stone Horse Expeditions.
What makes these autumn rides in Gorkhi Terelj National Park so special is the opportunity to learn more about herding traditions in Mongolia as we ride past camp sites where nomadic herder families have started winter preparations. And part of that is to strengthen their herds of livestock to face the harsh Mongolian winter. The grasslands of Gorkhi Terelj National Park are an important grazing resource for traditional herders who have used this landscape for centuries.

Riding past the campsites of nomadic herders preparing for winter

Riding in the park in fall offers great opportunities to see Mongolian horses as they roam free in the park. Herds of different sizes, as they graze and when we pass them, these curious and social animals may approach our horse team, whinny, or perhaps join and follow – in the latter case, our wranglers will push the horses back to spare the owner a long search for his herd. It is always a great view to see the horses of different colors in the autumn colored grasslands. Horses living naturally and behaving accordingly, herds lead by mares to new grazing areas and guarded by stallions that prance around to show off and that round up youngsters straying from the herd.
