Autumn Colors in the Khentii – 12 Days
Experience the Autumn Colors in the Khentii on Horseback
“Autumn colors in the Khentii” is our horse trek at the most colorful time in the Khentii Mountains. It runs twice in September, offering 10 full days of horseback explorations. As days are getting shorter, and nights cooler, these autumn treks are designed to make the best of this beautiful season, with more time for riding and less time moving camp.
Due to popular demand, we changed our tour itinerary slightly to fit in two 12 Day “Autumn Colors of the Khentii” horseback rides. The dates are September 3 – 14, and 19 – 30.
Enjoy Scenic Day Rides and the Comfort of Tented Camps
We still travel with the Stone Horse herd of pack and saddle horses, but we don’t move camp every day. Instead, apart from the first and last days, we set up tented base camps for several nights in locations from which to take day rides into the scenic surroundings – and returning to camp where a heated group tent is ready for pre-dinner drinks and snacks. Mornings are more leisurely, enjoying breakfast and saddling the trail horses for the day, while the pack horses have time off and our crew attends to the camp while the riders take off for the day.
Its a fantastic time to ride. Day time temperatures can get hot still, but mostly are pleasantly warm . Insects are – mostly – gone since there will have been nights below freezing already. This is the time when encounters with herds of free roaming horses are most common. Also wildlife sightings, of red deer, roe deer, bear and other species, are not uncommon.
Spectacular Autumn Colors in the Khentii Landscapes
And the colors are spectacular – the larch forests golden, aspen in gold and orange hues, the grasslands glowing in warm colors, all against a deep blue sky. In the distance, the first sprinkle of snow dusts the mountain tops. There can be cold snaps, a day or two, and a first snow may come through – that’s why we come prepared with heated tents, warm sleeping bags and set up base camps for autumn comfort.
