Springtime Treks Mongolia 2027
The Stone Horse Mongolia 2027 horse trekking adventures will again start in May, which is still early spring in our region. However, in an average season, much of the ground is snow free then, the first fresh grass is showing up and creeks and rivers have open water.
Our springtime horse rides are five-day treks with mostly day rides out of tented camps. Usually we move camp only during these shorter treks. This gives us more time to ride and allows for two different areas of Gorkhi Terelj National Park to explore on horseback. The weather and ground conditions will be the deciding factors for our spring trek route and camp sites.
The first spring horse riding tour is from May 17 to 23, with 5 days of horse trekking from May 18 to 22, the second tours is from May 31 to June 5, with 5 days of horse trekking from June 1 to 5.
Summer Horse Treks Mongolia 2027
Four 2027 Mongolia Horse Riding Treks are scheduled for the summer of 2027. All summer tours include 8 days of riding and camping in Gorkhi Terelj National Park. Starting in mid-June, summer treks see warm and hot weather, with the highest temperatures between 25 and 30 degree Celsius (77 to 86 degree Fahrenheit) typically in July. The last 8 day horse trek is in late August.
The dates of the summer horse trek tours are: June 15 to 24 (riding/camping from June 16 to 23), July 1 to 10 (riding/camping from July 2 to 9), July 16 to 25 (riding camping from July 17 to 24), August 19 to 28 (riding/camping from August 20 – 27).
If you like warm temperatures and want to see the grasslands and mountain meadows of Gorkhi Terelj National park at the height of wildflower season, a summer treks should be your choice.
If you also want to see the Naadam Festival, with competitions in archery, wrestling and horse racing, sign up for the July 1 to 10 horse trek with the Naadam Special. Since 2026, also World Horse Day is celebrated on July 11.
2027 August Wilderness Horse Trek
In 2027, early August sees us again traveling into the remote wilderness of the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area. We ride through the grasslands and forest steppe of Gorkhi Terelj National Park and enter the higher altitude landscapes of the Khentii wilderness. On this 12 day ride, we travel at a faster pace and move camp more often to reach our remote destinations.
This longest Stone Horse Expedition (July 31 to August 13), with riding and camping from August 1 to 12, is for experienced outdoor enthusiasts and wilderness travelers as well as good horseback riding experience. This is a true back country riding adventure, but there are great rewards for the adventurous riders – camping at scenic alpine lakes, visiting ancient temple ruins in old growth pine forest, crossing fast flowing rivers, following winding trails through boreal forest, and traversing high mountain plateaus and passes with sweeping views across the Khentii ranges.
Autumn Treks Mongolia 2027
Autumn horse treks begin in September. This month is a beautiful time to ride. Daytimes are typically warm and sunny. Nights are cooler and in the second half of September nighttime temperatures are likely to drop to around or sometimes a little below freezing (0 Celsius, 32 Fahrenheit). The autumn colors are stunning. The larch forests of Gorkhi Terelj National Park turn yellow and golden, birches a bright yellow, aspen groves glow in orange and golden tones, the grasslands turn to warm brown and yellow hues.
We make the most of this beautiful time in the park, running two 12 day horse treks from September 3 – 14, and September 19 – 30. Both treks include 10 days of riding. As daylight hours are dwindling now, we move camp less often, so we can do more day riding out of our tented camps at scenic sites.
From October 6 to 15 our “Autumn Riding Camp” is set up close to the autumn camp of our lead horseman. A two day ride brings us there, and we undertake four day rides in the park from there. Its also a nice opportunity to see more of the daily life of traditional herders in Mongolia. We ride back in two days to the Stone Horse base camp, which makes for a total of eight riding days.
The second half of October closes the 2027 season of Mongolia horse riding treks. The last adventure of the season offers 6 days of riding. To prepare for colder weather with nights definitely below freezing and the a likelihood of first snow, we run the late October rides out of a camp set up in advance, with insulated tents that all can be heated by a woodstove. It’s a great adventure but for those from warmer climates this will feel like “winter camping”. If late October temperatures drop down to real winter temperatures significantly below freezing day and night, we have the option to ride out of our base camp, returning to cozy heated gers in the evenings.
