Day One – Arrive in Ulaanbaatar and transport to hotel. Meet your guide for trip orientation. Depending on when you arrive, there will be time to see some of the city sites, or pick up that extra piece of equipment that you may need. There are several trekking shops in Ulaanbaatar.
Day Two – After breakfast, transport to Gorkhi-Terelj National Park where you meet with the yak cart, its driver, and your cook for the trek. Here you will transfer your camp items to the cart for packing and just take your day pack and the essential items you will need for the first day’s trek. After lunch you’ll cross the Terelj river and head upstream past herder gers and cabins to make camp next to the river for the evening.
Day Three – After breakfast and packing up your gear, you and the guide will begin further upstream, before turning into the mountains and walking over two passes. You’ll have lunch on the first mountain pass, before descending into a valley and then over the second pass and down to camp for the evening.
Day Four – This day will be trekking down a long wide open valley of mountain steppe land and out to where the Baruunbayangol (beautiful West river) meets with the larger Tuul river. The trek continues up the Baruunbayangol valley where the famous rock formations of the Gorkhi-Terelj National Park begin to appear. Camp will be in open meadows among the rocks for the night.
Day Five – This day explores the Blue Rock River valley and heads to the old ruin of Gunjiin Sum, or Princess Temple, located in a forested valley and hidden deep in the mountains. The afternoon the trek turns and makes its way down another valley to the Baruunbayangol to camp next to this river for the evening.
Day Six – We leave the Baruunbayangol and trek up and over a mountain ridge where we’ll have lunch and take in amazing views of the surrounding park. From the ridge the trek descends into the Zuunbayangol valley and down to the Tuul river for the nights camp.
Day Seven – From the camp along the Tuul river, the trek will head down the wide open mountain steppe land of the Tuul river valley, taking lunch at the confluence of the Tuul and Terelj rivers. After lunch a short walk back to Terelj village where we’ll cross the river and meet the vehicles for the return to Ulaanbaatar and the hotel.
Day Eight – If time allows, a short city tour or shopping before transport to the airport and departure. Some of the sites to see are the Gandan Monastery, Chinggis Khaan (formerly Sukhbaatar) Square, the National Museum, the State Department Store and a Cashmere shop or factory outlet.
