Gorkhi Terelj National Park Expedition – Horse Trekking in Mongolia in Late Autumn

Our Late Season Horse Trek in October

Our"Gorkhi late season Gorkhi Terelj National Park Expedition takes a total of 10 days from arrival in Mongolia to departure. Eight days are spent riding. We’ll have you in the saddle within 24 hours of entering the country. The Gorkhi Terelj National Park lies northeast of the capital city of Ulaanbaatar and within easy reach of the city.

For those who want to experience the real Mongolian countryside by horseback, this ride will cover some spectacular terrain, intriguing historical sites and exposure to traditional nomadic herding culture. If you are already in the country, we can pick you up at your hotel on the scheduled ‘Day One’ of the trip.

The late season treks explore the valleys of the Terelj and Tuul Rivers, and their scenic side valleys. Depending on riders’ abilities and horse riding level, and on weather conditions in the late season for horse trekking in Mongolia, we can adjust the itinerary to offer the best experience in the scenic autumn landscape of Gorkhi Terelj National Park.

As the days are colder now, we do more day rides out of tent and ger camps; this gives us more time to ride vs spending time moving camp now as the daylight hours are much less than during our summer horse treks. Meals will be taken in heated group tents or gers. During nights at ger camp facilities, your sleeping ger is heated in the evening and early morning.

Price includes all in-country transportation, hotel accommodation with breakfast, permits, all camping equipment, horse gear and accommodation – tent/ger – while in the back country.

Late Season in Gorkhi Terelj National Park

In autumn, the grasslands and forests of the park display beautiful colors. What makes this time special are the activities of the nomadic herder families who now return to the park from summer pastures. This ride offers great opportunity to see herds of free roaming horses and other livestock in the park. Herder families are fixing winter camps, preparing fuel and provisions for winter. Their herds of horses, cattle and yak graze in the park to gain strength for the harsh Mongolian winter.

Autumn is a great time to ride – with sunny days, crisp air and insects gone. But October it can be chilly, and we may wake to a beautiful scenery in snow. Check out our Clothing List ! And rest assured, on all riding tours from September onward, we carry a group tent and wood stove to make the time in camp and meal times cozy.

“We’re already planning next year’s trip…”

Three friends and I went on the last trip of October 2014 to Gorkhi Terelj National Park. I was the only rider of the group, but the horses were so patient and gentle, and Keith and Sabine so instructive and encouraging, my friends were cantering along the plains by Day 3. The food was always excellent; the scenery varied and spectacular; the horsemen efficient and professional. It doesn’t matter if you’re an experienced rider or totally green, there will be a horse for you, and brilliant guides and horsemen to teach you to ride it. You’ll be well-fed, warm and so well taken care of, you might not want to leave.” Charmaine Tan, Singapore, October 2014
