Mongolia Wilderness Conservation Holiday Adventure
Horseback Expedition for a Mongolia Wilderness Conservation Holiday Adventure
A fun trip with a purpose
Join our annual Mongolia Wilderness Conservation Holiday Adventure! This is a special expedition – as on other trips, we ride through Gorkhi Terelj National Park and enter the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area. Following the Tuul river into its upper reaches, we will explore mountain meadows as we search for rare endangered butterflies, an integral part of wildlife fauna important to a healthy ecosystem and biodiversity of the area. Sightings are recorded and relayed to the relevant Mongolian researchers and protected area planners for monitoring and future decisions about conservation. Our guests will be briefed on what to look for and provided with laminated color sheets of the butterfly species to identify.
This activity will bring us into some of most beautiful flower filled meadows of the Khentii mountains and have us exploring areas normally not visited on other trips. We’ll also be passing by and spending nights at scenic lakes and riverside campsites. Each year we work with the Khan Khentii Special Protected Area Administration and its rangers to determine conservation activities we will address and actively have our guests participate in. Rangers may or may not accompany us on this trip, depending on their work demands at the time. However, our lead horseman Byamba, is a volunteer ranger with the Khentii.
In two previous seasons, August 2015 and 2016, this horse trek with a purpose saw us working with rangers of the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area around this lake in this great wilderness area. Stone Horse team and guests cleaned up campsites and erected back country toilets – carried in by our pack horses in prefabricated pieces. Rangers worked on signage for waste and camping management at the lake – while everybody also took time to relax, hike, and enjoy the wilderness scenery. Read more…
The “Wilderness Conservation Adventure” takes place once a season as we continue to work with the administration of the Khan Khentii Strictly Protected Area to improve wilderness conservation measures and visitor management. In 2017, we installed wildlife camera’s near Hagiin Har Nuur (Lake of Black Lichen) to monitor wildlife use. We move these around from year to year to monitor wildlife at different locations. It’s a great adventure and at a great time of year for a swim in the lakes we camp near. With some luck, you’ll see moose grazing along a lake shore at dusk, as we have on previous expeditions.
